Release Date:

Catching up on various racing news, a particular highlight has been the recent announcement that Star Wars Episode I: Racer is to be released for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 with updated controls.

The game will include 25 playable racers, including the likes of Anakin Skywalker, Sebulba, and Ratts Tyerell, as well as various circuits spanning 8 unique worlds including Tatooine, Baroonda, and Malastare.

Discover short-cuts and secrets to master your lap times and work with pit droids to upgrade your podracer for performance. The title also supports split-screen multiplayer (Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4) and LAN multiplayer (Nintendo Switch).

Star Wars Episode I: Racer originally released alongside the film in the late ’90s and was a pretty average racing title in our opinion. The N64 version was blurry with a poor frame rate and limited details in terms of polygon models. The PC conversion fared better but it wasn’t until the Sega arcade version we saw the true potential of the concept. Great potential limited by graphical performance – with the modern systems that shouldn’t be an issue and aid in realising that vision.

First impressions from the screenshots are not favourable, textures are blocky, details are low and it does indeed look like a direct port with very little in the way of innovation. No online play, no online leaderboards and no exploration of the potential this title contains for a modern system. Lucasfilm and developer Aspyr haven’t given a release date as of yet, but we’ll be sure to keep our ear to the ground for more info and will bring video gameplay impressions should we get access to a build.

How long have you been searching for pixel screenshots? This game supported acceleration on pc. It looked good on the N64 and Dreamcast. Especially on the crt. Author, the news is presented clumsily. Fans are waiting for a direct port.
