News DIRT 5 Stampede Mode gameplay revealed

As the week’s fly past we see yet more glimpses of DiRT 5 in action and today it’s time for a look at the Stampede mode. Rugged off-road action in a Jimco Unlimited Truck, challenging courses and various elements in terms of the dynamic weather, note the incoming lightning storm. The various weather conditions affecting ground textures and driving conditions, not to mention that up to 12 trucks will be able to compete making for some hectic gameplay action. Robert Karp, DIRT 5 Development Director at Codemasters commented: ‘Stampede features rough terrain and the opportunity for vehicles to get airborne with jumps dotted throughout each circuit. Perfect for unlimited trucks and buggies, the action intensifies with 12 cars all battling for victory so players will need to get their elbows out and hold their nerve.’

Looking at the video in more detail, again we see a well modelled environment, a circuit with lots of undulation and various challenging corners. However, at this stage the splash effects from the puddles are almost nonexistent, not enough mud gathering on the vehicle and this makes a feeling that lacks the ruggedness of the driving action. It needs to get messy; you need to see the challenge and without any other vehicles on track this demo didn’t showcase the game as well as perhaps it could have. Indeed the mud effects did appear more prevalent on our buggy racing when testing the game, so again, do note everything is a work in progress.

In fact, along with the Pathfinder video, both demos appeared to be struggling with frame rate. No doubt still awaiting optimization, in many respects it would be better to keep the frame rate fluid on a slightly lower setting. Sometimes less is more when demoing games, and from looking at these videos it did feel like our coverage felt rather more polished than the new development elements we see here.

DiRT 5 is shaping up to be one of the best racing games of 2020 and the fact that the game supports both Xbox Smart Delivery and PlayStation’s free upgrade is a great addition to the package, an aspect which has been lost in recent weeks that makes for a huge boost to those moving up to the next generation of consoles. DIRT 5 will be released on 9th October 2020 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC, followed later this year by Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5.
