Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown (TDUSC) seems to be coming along under the radar at the moment. Besides the trailers we have enjoyed for the past couple of years, news seems to have almost completely dried up. Sometimes it almost feels like vapourware. But we know KT Racing are working hard on making this a true sequel to Test Drive that fans want and recently more news has started to leak out. This can only bode well for the months ahead and hopefully a confirmed release date. We’ll wait and see, but first let’s take a look at the mountain of new news and screenshots released today.

Rather than break it all down into my words, I’ve added he info from TDUSC steam page. First dealerships.

A REALISTIC DEALERSHIP EXPERIENCE
Buying a car in TDU isn’t a trivial matter; it rewards the efforts you’ve made to earn enough money and the decision shouldn’t be taken lightly. With TDUSC, you don’t just buy lots of cars without a second thought. We want each car you own to be something you love, an extension of yourself and your personality. What will be your next car? It should be the car you’ve dreamed about for several hours playing the game, one that shows off your style, one that reflects who you are, and one that will help you win the next races! What could be more exciting than going from dealership to dealership, money burning a hole in your pocket, choosing and customizing your next car? And then there’s checking out all the models, test driving them, browsing their specs, and finally making the big decision. After that, you just need to give your new toy the personal touch, including the paint job, interior, rims… your dream car. And then you’re finally handed the keys and you can proudly say it’s yours!

Are you a fan of American cars? Italian, German? Do you want a daily driver or a Supercar? Off-road or GT? You’ll find 14 specialist dealerships, each offering different brands, all over Hong Kong Island. Which one will have the car of your dreams? Two iconic marques from the TDU universe also have their own dealerships, entirely dedicated to their brands: Lamborghini and Ferrari. You’ll find a wide selection of their models in those dealerships.

The vibe of TDU is more about bonding with one particular car rather than collecting hundreds of vehicles. Each car means something, it has its own story and it sounds like TDUSC retains this vibe, good to see top automotive brands already confirmed as being there. On this subject Alain Jarniou, Creative Director commented:

“Buying a car in TDU is always a special moment. It’s a core part of the game for fans of beautiful cars. In TDUSC we have created special places that showcase our cars. You’ll discover them in real locations throughout Hong Kong Island as you progress and level up in the game. Before buying a new car, we make sure you can take time to make the right choice. You can move around freely within the dealership, interact with the cars to choose the model you want, admire the exterior in detail, and get inside after opening the door to appreciate the comfort, try out the horn, and even start the engine, which is not always possible in real life! All this interaction happens with other players around in what we are calling “social hubs”. Like all areas where you can move your avatar around, it’s a meeting place for chatting with other players and other car enthusiasts like yourself. We think it’s essential that players can meet and communicate with each other. You can then decide to play together and greatly increase the fun of driving around in amazing cars (and earning bonuses at the same time).

Before making your final choice, you can obviously test drive the car to make sure the handling and drive meet your expectations. When you’ve made your decision, you can then choose the exact model you want. The game offers the official options from manufacturers: paint, interior colours and rims, so you can purchase your dream car. If you want to take the customization further, we have created special places for that: Workshops. Finally, to make the experience as authentic as possible, the transaction concludes by you receiving the keys. That’s all in the spirit of Test Drive Unlimited”.

This all sounds good, so much to do and discover plus that social vibe that made the previous game so great to play. Let’s learn about the workshops.

SOLAR CROWN WORKSHOPS
Want to give your cars a personal touch? That’s what the Solar Crown Workshops are for. Need to prepare for the next races? Need more power, traction or a more playful car for pulling off the longest drifts? Stop by the Workshops! Looking to flaunt your Street or Sharp style with a full or partial paint job? You’ll want the Workshops for that too!

If you’re looking for a performance boost, you have a wide range of modifications available: from suspensions to the gearbox to complete configuration of the engine. What if you’re not much of a mechanic? The technical characteristics have been simplified to help you focus on what’s important: power, traction, acceleration, braking… In total, there are 13 customizable performance parts across 6 categories for combustion-powered cars, and 12 customizable performance parts across 6 categories for electric cars. Customizing the look of your cars is essential for any driver aiming for victory in the Solar Crown. Winning is great, but winning in style is even better!
Are you more of a purist and not really into liveries? You can choose one of the manufacturer’s colours when you buy the car and just keep that. Or do you prefer to get creative and obsess over every detail? Express yourself in the Livery Editor and show off your style: metallic, matte, pearlescent and chrome paint jobs, and of course hundreds of stickers and decals to create unique designs.

As you can see, there are lots of ways you can customize your car. However, you can’t just claim to be an artist to become one. The Solar Crown organization has rules: access to the modifications available for your cars depends on your Reputation level. Your ties to the Sharps and Streets also unlocks unique customization options that are specific to each clan.

We know that the engine will be a significant upgrade over that used by KT Racing in WRC Generations. That already featured a quality livery painting option, so hopes are high here for a wide range of customisation. Discussing the Workshops feature, Alain Jarniou, Creative Director adds: “The ability to customize your car is an essential part of an MMO like TDU. Whether it’s to express your creativity to show off your style to other players or to tune your car to match the race conditions or explore off the beaten track, the Workshops are there to give you as many options as possible. Like our other social hubs, Workshops are large community spaces. You can customize our cars and see what other players have done to their own vehicles. It’s a chance to look at the most beautiful liveries and discuss the best configurations with other players. Based on your level, you gain access to increasingly precise tuning options, which means you can create configurations for use in races later on. TDUSC offers a driving simulation that is accessible for those who want an experience you can just pick up and play, yet challenging for those who enjoy spending time tweaking configurations and adapting their cars to match their driving style and for optimal performance in the various race conditions.”

The game is sounding great. Looking at the screenshots and it is clear the car models are coming along nicely while the locations retain that TDU aesthetic. Graphically the game is still deep in development so we won’t analyse to much but there does appear to be room for improvment on anti-aliasing in these shots, hopefully that will all be in place for release.

So, that’s it for now on TDUSC news. Hopefully we’ll finally see a trailer at some point and actually get a glimpse of the game in action. Suffice to say I’m feeling the buzz, it may be just a mile rumble at this stage but it’s all ready to go off and when it does, I’ll make sure Team VVV have all of the exclusive news ready to go.

The PSVR2 clearly enjoys a lot more performance than its predecessor, this means that potentially more racing games can be accurately converted to the format. Another aspect which aids the PSVR 2 is that many of the PS5 games released thus far have been PS4 games upgraded to run on PS5 rather than maximizing the full power of the format. This gives a greater opportunity to upgrade some of these titles to PSVR2 without the usual reduction in graphics and physics experienced in the past.

So, with that in mind, I put together an initial selection of PS4/PS5 titles that could convert well. Along with previous PSVR titles that should see an upgrade and a range of titles that probably won’t see a conversion due to the relist restraints and limitations on performance, but it would be nice. Check out the video below and let me know your thoughts in the YouTube comments.

An unexpected announcement this week has arrived in the form of The Crew Motorfest. Initially I was under the impression this was another DLC for The Crew 2, but no! This is a new full game experience that will take on an entirely new location. That being the mountainous island of O‘ahu in the Hawaiian archipelago, which has previously been featured in the Test Drive Unlimited games. A location of beauty, scale, and full of potential automotive challenges.

It is hard to believe that it will soon be 6 years since The Crew 2 was revealed. A game which was considered divisive by many in the community who were more dedicated to the driving scene. Let’s take a look in more detail, The Crew Motorfest will feature a ‘one-of-a-kind festival’ that will let players enjoy the best experiences car culture has to offer. This giving very much a Forza Horizon vibe.

In the media details provided via Ubisoft: Motorfest will allow car lovers to fulfil their ultimate action driving bucket list through a series of tailor-made races, themed events, and other unique challenges. Whatever your favourite car style, The Crew Motorfest has something for everyone. Racing through the city streets of Honolulu, going down the ashy volcano slopes, adventuring deep in the lush rainforest, drifting along the curvy mountain roads, or just chilling on the sunny beach. On their own or with their crew, they will be able to explore the entire island behind the wheel of hundreds of the most legendary vehicles.

So, lots of automotive action on the way, it all sounds like fun, but the car physics will be a key determining factor in its success if Ubisoft hope to recapture the success of the previous titles, especially in the face of upcoming competition. The Crew Motorfest will be available in 2023 on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, as well as Windows PC through the Ubisoft Store and Epic Games Store. Players will also be able to access the game through a Ubisoft+ subscription on PC and Amazon Luna*.

We’ll be keeping an eye on the developments at Ivory Tower and check out the trailer below along with a few of my random thoughts and first impressions.

With just over a week to go to the release of the #PSVR2 we’ve been getting a better picture of the titles confirmed for launch with the format. But outside of say 3-4 titles, I’m still not wholly convinced the support for VR is there. It has also been rather odd to see how controlled and limiting the media previews have been of the hardware and games. I have found myself questioning the honesty and experience of many of the media outlets, their reference material for quality and their experience for rating specific titles.

Watching IGN’s recent coverage on GT7 VR and it is clear the reporter is just filling time while talking about his previously owed DeLorean or his knowledge of a Tesla. Many key observations expected from a VR preview just weren’t present. While other games still look like indie titles upgraded.

PSVR titles don’t work with PSVR2, while many those that do require paid upgrades. I’ve gone over many of my reservations of the PSVR in my video below. But the main concern is a lack of quality titles and another waste of money on a product that is not properly supported by the wider industry. I love VR, it is an amazing concept and I still feel it needs supporting to reach its ultimate potential, let’s hope games companies meet consumers halfway and give it some support or it could end up as the death nell of the format and gathering dust in the years to follow.

MX Vs ATV is one of those brands that fans consistently support. It garnered a loyal following based on past iterations and at its core there is always a fun racing game to enjoy. Often there is a similar trait of somewhat dated graphics combined with arcade elements. Moving onto MX Vs ATV Legends and it appears to be more of the same, some fun gameplay, graphics that are sometimes dated, sometimes featuring decent lighting and textures, a mixed bag.

You can check out my review impression on the video below. This tests the Xbox Series X version and goes through a rather brief top line review highlighting a few core strengths and weaknesses. Suffice to say there is fun to be had if you’re a fan of the genre or franchise, however the game does a feature a range of bugs and issues that need to be smoothed out while the UI and navigational experience is dated at best. One purely for fans of the genre.

Despite its 5 year hiatus Forza Motorsport is still one of the biggest names in automotive gaming. Helped in-part by the continued success of its cohort Forza Horizon. However, it has been over a decade since Forza Motorsport truly shone at is best. Failures to replicate an authentic physics model have held the franchise back. Of course, from an exterior perspective you might barely notice, with the announcement of new car brands, professional marketing and esports competitions with powerful licenses. All must be well then? Well, no, eventually these physics issues will catch up and every now and then a game requires an overhaul, and that is where we find ourselves.

5 years since the previous release, no longer FM8, this is Forza Motorsport, a new envisioning from the ground up. So, with that in mind I look forward to the latest presentation with great enthusiasm and the potential that is represents.

Ok, so I didn’t say much after the presentation, my disappointment was palpable. Not only did this presentation miss the mark, it also wasn’t terribly impressive. I went back and watched it in full quality, then poured over the latest official screen shots. Time to gather my thoughts. At this point I admit to a feeling of anxiety, I know that my take isn’t a positive one, I know that my feedback will cause fanboy rage and I know that Microsoft/Xbox/Turn10 may take offence to my experience and feedback being of a highly critical nature. Initially holding back the video for a few days, I was unsure if it was even worth the battle of making it public. The collateral damage on all sides. But at some point you have to go with your feelings and just get it out there.

I hope all of this has given Turn 10 some food for thought and look forward to future presentations providing some further details on those physics improvements, of course failure here could determine the future of the franchise permanently and we all hope that FM sets the franchise back on the on the right path.

World Superbikes has always held a very special place in the hearts of motorbikes fans. There is a very status to these guys that is grounded and quite unlike anything else. Their ability to take commercially available sports bikes and take them to the limit, seeing the bikes wobbling through corners as the riders straddle the absolute limit of performance.

So, it is great excite that we see this latest addition announced, a decade since Milestone’s previous SBK Generations title. Now with new graphics and audio bringing the whole experience bang up to date. No further details yet but enjoy the latest trailer and I’ll keep an eye out for new developments.

Dakar released in 2018 was a much sought after title for an epic racing event which undoubtedly deserves more recognition among both sports and motor racing fans alike. Dakar 2018 had some good ideas and lofty ambitions, but ultimately wasn’t in a place to meet the expectations of gamers. With wonky physics, complex map system, irritating co-driver and numerous bugs. Dakar was an idea, yet the final execution left a lot to be desired, eventually scoring a lowly 4/10 in our review. A sequel might have been expected a year or two later, but all silence on the development front. Had the project been canned? No idea till now, and good news! Dakar Desert Rally has finally been announced and will be releasing in 2022.

The title has a new approach , rather than Dakar 2021 or Dakar 2, Dakar Desert Rally is already setting itself apart. Not a yearly franchise but instead a full reboot, hopefully taking on board both the elements players enjoyed from the 2018 version and combining the positive feedback into making this game all it has the potential to be. Let’s take a look at the trailer:

S, we can say too much, the trailer appears pre-rendered and without actual gameplay we can assess an potential improvements that have been made. However it is epic in approach, bringing new more colourful vibes an that action gaming feel. More news when we have it.

A surprise announcement this weekend, Redout 2 will be releasing in 2022. Sequel to Redout (2016), an underrated and somewhat underappreciated title. Redout won our VVV award for Best Indie Racing Game in 2017. An ambitious title with silky smooth fluid visuals of circuits visualised in a vast scale.

Redout introduced an innovative and unique control system to magnificent effect, giving perfect control while always intuitive to play. This combined with various imaginative locations and a stunning in-house soundtrack.

If there was one area lacking it was the design of the craft, which all felt a little soulless and without any real design aesthetic. But if this can be fixed along with a new front end and various online improvements, we could have a great title with could dominate the future racing genre. Trailer below, more news when we have it.

Last week Polyphony gave us a first look at raw gameplay of the Deep Forrest Raceway that will be returning to Gran Turismo 7. A much loved track in the previous games of the series that had been missed out in recent years by GT Sport. So, it is with some excitement that we sit back and check out that lap of a much appreciated, drivers circuit. Let’s take a look at that lap in action:

So, first impressions were of being underwhelmed, the track appears wider, less undulation, colours look washed out, while the iconic overhanging trees removed. Along with various changes to textures, all making it feel rather dull and sterile. Surely the track was better than this? Had my memory failed me? It was time to bust out Gran Turismo 6. In the video below I was able to go into greater detail on the changes made.

Already after a few laps on GT6 the memories returned, the fun of the driving experience. The essence of the course and that wonderful final sector with committed high speed corners requiring pin point accuracy. All of this now lost, not only the aforementioned issues, but so many more changes simply to make online racing potentially more competitive. This confusing the approach to GT7 and mixing it with GT Sport.

There no short answer to how we ended up here and I could write an essay on the changes and room for improvement, suffice to say that so far GT7 isn’t exactly setting the world alight. A PS4 game years in the making but in the era of the PS5, gamers are expectations are high and so far it is feeling more like an expansion for GT Sport, rather than the definitive Gran Turismo experience we’ve been waiting for. Only time will tell.
