This week sees the finals of McLarens World’s Fastest Gamer, the winner to be awarded a full-time job at McLaren as their official simulation F1 test driver. This is the first time an F1 team has opened itself up to a competition of this nature and yet another new avenue explored since the new McLaren boss Zak Brown took over in 2016.
Zak a keen fan of motorsport with a range of automotive experience and much regarded for his marketing skills, it has been clear to see this influence both with the introduction of the WFG and with McLaren’s 2017 entry into the Indy 500. I caught up with him to discuss the progress made on World’s Fastest Gamer. The changes in culture and potential for the team moving forward with a new Renault power unit and quite possibly the world’s fastest gamer powering their detailed simulation program.
In part 2 we’ll talk to a couple of the competitors and to the man behind this current venture; Darren Cox, along with a brief tour behind the scenes at the heritage of this great automotive brand.
