News World’s Fastest Gamer contest launches with Aston Martin race seat prize

The second season of the World’s Fastest Gamer esports competition has launched, complete with the grand prize of an year-long Aston Martin racing contract.

Like the original World’s Fastest Gamer series, the competition will see entrants across a variety of gaming platforms race against each other, to find the gaming talent with the potential to succeed as the Swiss racing team R-Motorsport’s newest recruit.

Unlike the original World’s Fastest Gamer competition, which had as its main prize a role as a McLaren simulator driver, the winner of “World’s Fastest Gamer 2” will get proper time behind the wheel of a purpose-built competiton car, in high profile events such as the 24 hour endurance races at Daytona and Spa-Francorchamps.

R-Motorsport’s references to entries in races at Brands Hatch, Monza, the Nurburgring and Paul Ricard suggests the World’s Fastest Gamer victor will also represent the Swiss racing team in the DTM touring car and Blancpain GT Endurance championships.

The format of the contest will be a bit different this time around, too. The World’s Fastest Gamer organisers say eight of the 10 finalists have already been selected, saying they’ve been picked from “the biggest esports racing championships of 2019”.

The remaining two spots will be filled using wildcard qualifying events, which will be held later this year. It wasn’t revealed when the events will take place, though the organisers did confirm one wildcard round will be hosted online on the PC racing sim rFactor 2, with the other running on mobile platforms via Gear.Club.

After undergoing a “rigorous selection process” in the UK, the 10 finalists will be whittled down to six, and then flown to R-Motorsport’s facilities in Switzerland to undergo a four-day training course. This stage of the process will see the line-up whittled down again, with the two remaining candidates being entered into an on-track head-to-head finale at Hockenheim during the DTM race weekend there on 5-6 October 2019.

Selecting which entrants will progress to each stage along the way will be a two-person judging panel, consisting of the first World’s Fastest Gamer winner Rudy van Buren and the legendary racing driver Juan Pablo Montoya.

More details on the second World’s Fastest Gamer contest and the competitors are expected to be revealed in the coming weeks.
