Toyota’s motorsports division will jump into the Esports fray next month, with the launch of a new Gran Turismo Sport-based one-make online racing series.
As its name suggests, the Toyota GR Supra GT Cup will be a one-make racing series, where the only eligible car will be the new Toyota GR Supra that was added to Gran Turismo Sport in the game’s March 2019 content update.
The full race schedule will be revealed closer to launch, but Toyota has confirmed the GR Supra GT Cup will run between April and October this year, with the finals being held during the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show that opens on 24th October.
Much like the FIA-sanctioned Gran Turismo Championships, Gran Turismo Sport players around the world will be eligible to enter – as long as they own a PlayStation 4 and the game, and are at least six years old.
As well as organising this one-make Esports series, Toyota will be the series partner for the 2019 Gran Turismo Championships, which were kicked off this weekend with a ‘World Tour’ event in Paris, France.
According to Toyota, this new emphasis on esports will help the car maker in “to make motorsports and sport cars more accessible, and enjoyable across generations and around the world”. It’s also hoped the online racing activities will allow the firm to make “ever-better cars” in the future.
